Week5: Final Outcomes & Presentation

2019-11-2/ Sunny

Brief: Design an artefact that expresses the experiential qualities of gravity.

Partner: Lee & Yitong & Ana & Pat

Original project

The new week begins! According to the teacher's advice to our tutorial, we decided to try to make a hat with a track, and a one-piece suit to change the weight of different parts of the body, which makes people feel unstable. So we decided to go to the Poundland store to find some materials to test after the tutorial.

We found a dog food bowl that can be used as a hat. Then look for the ball placed in this track for a long time. Because the ordinary balls in the store, such as tennis balls, did not meet our requirements in terms of weight. Finally, we chose a bird food that was heavier than tennis. Wrap the bird in tape and put it in the track. Then wear it on your head. We also chose to wear a pair of high-profile glasses that give people a feeling of dizziness. Lee and Anna wore this device to test the stairs and uneven floors of the library. I am responsible for recording these tests. The effect does exist, but because the bird food is wrapped in tape, the surface is not smooth enough. The friction is too large, so the sliding in the track is not smooth enough. So we decided to look for alternatives.

Second Test

I made a brand new track on the hat because the

previousone was done by temporary tests, so it was

not strong enough. However, because we were unable

to find a replacement ball, we only temporarily put this

planon the hat on hold. We chose to conduct a second

experiment. It is to change the weight of different parts

of the human body. I and Yitong first went to the clothing

market and hope to find suitable onesies. However, the

team members agreed that it would be better to first use the knee bandage to tie the weight. So we went to a large supermarket called B&Q. We found the sand used in the building. Everyone suggested that you can go to Poundland to buy a fresh-keeping bag and put the sand in a fresh-keeping bag. I also bought some stockings in Poundland. Insert the sand into stockings or fix it with stockings.

After we bought the materials, we returned to the library to make them. We are first prepared to tie a sandbag to the left and right arms respectively. Then tie two sandbags to the left leg. Attach a sandbag to your right leg. When we made all the sandbags, we first wanted to put the sandbags into the socks, and the result failed. Then I decided to use a sock to fix the sandbag. Due to the ball, we finally decided to put a sandbag in a wool cap to change the gravity on the head.

Anna put on all the equipment and completed the process from the library to the stairs and then down the stairs. The results of the test were very satisfying to our team members. Then we set up a story together. The content is a drunk person. When you get home, you need to find your own key in the bag. Putting on our device to complete this task, the purpose of our project is reached.

Presentation

On the day of the presentation, our group first introduced the creative sources of our group and the process of our testing. Then I found the classmate Lili to help us complete this task. Together, we helped her tie these sandbags, then let her go through the classroom, reach the last table in the classroom, find the keys in the bag we placed on the table beforehand, and the task was completed.

Feedback And Reflection

I also summarized the following points for the feedback given by the teacher and classmates:

  • the project is too simple, a bit like a bodystorm.

  • the story setting is too simple. We can make the process more interesting, for example, making a door and how to use this key to open the door.

This is a new challenge and experience for me. Because I have to overcome language difficulties and some differences of thought. Fortunately, my team and I were able to overcome these problems successfully. I really like the bodystorm approach. It's like an experiment, and it gives me an intuitive feel for my design. At the same time, my team members also have a lot to learn from me, everyone's efficiency is very high.
