2020-1-24 / Sunny

What we need to complete this week is a literature survey. We each selected the parts that we were interested in to conduct research, and then we collected them and discussed them together on Friday. Before that, my team members and I agreed to go to the exhibition of winter light together to find some inspiration.

The Literature

I set out to find the literature I was interested in. I first read the literature recommended by the tutor on the brief.

Space and the Visible
Visual and spatial de-/ and per-ception in the works of Dan Graham and James Turrell

This paper has provided an in-depth analysis of selected artworks of Dan Graham and James Turrell, two artists who mainly work with space and (in-) visibility. breast cancer. This is an interactive device.

The change of spatial perception into a spatial deception is an important theme in their artworks. We know the light has a function of dividing space. For example, when a beam of light is on the wall , it will produce bright surfaces and shadows due to different spatial structures. But In Turrell’s works the actual spatial limits of his installation are blurred, he plants strangely solid, three-dimensional objects in a dark chamber, which turn out to be pure light constructions.

Example

I also found some specific examples of light and space. This is an example of a digital in the hospital.

The hospital is always cold and uneasy. Especially for children, they are particularly afraid of going to the hospital and in Cabrini Hospital, here created a lovely multimedia entertainment space for performing arts in order to make children less resistant When no one passes by, the multimedia interactive wall looks like an ordinary wall. When someone passes by, various effects are automatically triggered. There are 15 ways to interact, according to day and night; Raindrops fall flowers and flowers sway, seven colors of the rainbow and so on.

Another example is in architecture. Such as The Church Of Light.

One of the particular features of this church is the slope of the ground as the visitor walks towards the altar. The altar is against the wall, whose horizontal and vertical openings create a cross, flooding the Christian premises with light. The opening in the wall, in the shape of a cross, is not similar to the traditional Christ Cross, with the horizontal bar lower than usual. This subtle difference is important because it conveys the idea that everyone has its source of light. The light emanating from the Cross, symbolic representation of the Divine, associated with nature, provides the necessary sacredness to the church. Light and shadow, when properly combined, disclose not only the interior of the church but reveal the magnificence of its architectural spaces, connecting the indoor and the outdoor and creating the illusion of light space, thanks to the provided optical changes.

Finally, in the group discussion, we put together our respective literature and discussed it.

Choose three topics that everyone is interested in:

  1. Sunlight and Mental Health

  2. Spatial design and Lighting

  3. Psychological Impact of light on human.

Next week's task is that we will conduct field research around these three themes, and the place I choose is the school library and cafe for observation.
