Week22-24: Project Brief

2020-4-30 / Sunny

Brief: Design an experience that reveals and explores the everyday impact of space satellites

Partner: Alex & Abigail & Evelyn

Introduction

In the third term, I worked with Satellite Applications Catapult, a national organisation developing satellite technology in the UK, on the only project of the term. This project involves uncovering hidden aspects of satellite technology and thinking about how we can deploy the tremendous technological power of satellite technology for the benefit of society.

The first two weeks were literature review. My team members and I first looked up information about the satellite separately, and then recorded what we were interested in, and finally put it together.

I combed the satellite from the following THREE aspects:

  1. Principle of operation

  2. Satellite technology application

  3. Satellite example

How satellites work

Take communication satellite for example: The satellite communication system is composed of two parts: the space part -- communication satellite and the ground part -- communication ground station. In this system, a communication satellite is actually a communication relay station suspended in the air. With its commanding height and wide field of view, it can transmit and reflect wireless signals such as telegraph, television, radio, and data, regardless of distance, as long as it is within its coverage area.

Satellite technology application

Artificial earth satellites are widely used and of various kinds.

There are messenger communications satellites in space,

Space "remote sensing" Earth resources Satellite,

Space weather station weather satellites,

Space "guide" navigation satellite,

Space "spy" reconnaissance satellite,

Space "announcers" broadcast satellites,

The space surveyor geodesic satellite,

Space "clairvoyant" astronomical satellites and so on, constitute a huge "satellite family". The man-made earth satellite has the ability to observe the earth in an all-round way. A satellite orbiting over the equator can cover 163 million square kilometers of the earth's surface, more than 5,600 times the area covered by an 8,000-meter spy plane. Therefore, for the completion of communication, reconnaissance, navigation, and other tasks, it has incomparable advantages.

Satellite example

A panoramic view of qin Shi Huang's mausoleum, which is so large and reportedly filled with mercury, is not easy to study. But satellites allow us to see the entire tomb at a macro level, facilitating archaeological work, and each new discovery brings a new interpretation of history.

With a general understanding of satellites, each of us will continue to dig deeper into some of the satellite knowledge that we may ignore in our daily life.
