Literature Research

To give us a better understanding of the group of pregnant women, we read a lot of literature in the past two weeks.

First, we did a mind map of the basic situation of pregnant women. We put a lot of emphasis on psychological research. We divided these researches into two parts:

1. The definition of emotion

2. Two is the mood during pregnancy

About Emotional

Chuyi and I looked separately for theories about emotions. She sorted out the definition of emotion and the reasons that affect emotion, and concluded that: emotion plays a key role in the production of three elements.

First, environmental change. That is, the premise of emotional existence is influenced by external factors.

The second is individual needs. Emotional arousal depends on the individual's own needs. Third, cognition. People's feelings and evaluation of the surrounding environment and things, people need to make cognitive response to external stimuli, thus causing different degrees of emotional change.

My focus is to combine these theories to find out the characteristics and effects of emotional changes during pregnancy and the reasons for these effects.

During the pre-pregnancy period, pregnant women are more prone to feelings of shyness, fear and disgust. Some adverse pregnancy reactions make pregnant women emotionally unstable. By the second trimester, the stability of the pregnancy response is also accompanied by the emotional stability of the pregnant woman. At this stage, the fear originates mainly from the health of the fetus. The third trimester is also a period when the rapid growth and activities of the fetus are more and more obvious. With the increase of pressure, pregnant women are more likely to cause anxiety, excitement, depression and other emotions.

However, strong mood swings can have adverse effects on both the pregnant woman and the fetus. Memory loss and sleep disorders during pregnancy have been linked to mood swings. Severe cases can even lead to mental health problems and mental illness during pregnancy and affect the development of the fetus.

The reasons for pregnant women's mood swings are as follows: firstly, the changes in hormone levels affect the emotional changes of pregnant women at the physiological level. The second is identity change. Women experience changes in their social roles, relationships and life status after they become pregnant. For example, a woman's worries about career changes during childbirth can lead to pregnancy anxiety. Finally, there is the relationship between the pregnant woman and her husband. That's what we're most interested in. Because we found that this is also the most important factor affecting the emotional changes of women during pregnancy. We will focus on looking for theoretical information in this area next week.

Related Works

While looking up literature reviews, we also looked at works of art and design related to pregnant women.

————“Fibo, as a work in progress, explores the semi uncharted territory of pregnancy devices for partners, linking the partner to a fetus. As Jung et al. [6] explain: “The meaning of an object can only be ascertained by linking it with something of value, and something of value can gain meaning by being linked to something else of value. What really makes the difference is the nature of the linkage”. In this work, we explore three linkages which we’ve derived from our experiences with Fibo: identity, enabling stories, and designing for subtlety [13].”

My idea: Fibo is a wearable jewelry device that helps men and women who are not pregnant or who are planning to become pregnant experience the movements of their unborn baby. An object (emotional ties, stories, memories) that links a pregnant woman, a partner, and a child.

MammiBelli [7] is a wearable device for pregnant

women which monitors kicks and displays these

movements on a LCD display.

These are very specific interactive devices, and what's interesting to see from these cases is that sexual issues after pregnancy are an interesting point, so we're going to focus next week on the relationship between a woman and her partner after pregnancy.

At the same time, we will also refer to some works of art about women, from which we can feel the feelings the author wants to convey and help us get inspired.

MommyTummy is a pregnancy experience system simulating fetal movement [10] using a variety of sensors and actuators in a wearable jacket.

Keith Edmeer's exhibition, "Mother Mold", expresses his own childhood experiences and feelings about his Mother. The mother's dress was made of pink translucent resin, giving it a warm feeling.

Gustav Klimt's "Hope" (1907-08) depicts a pregnant woman, head bowed, praying over her swollen womb. A skeleton protruded from the edge of her swollen belly. At the pregnant woman's feet, three women with bowed heads raised their hands in prayer. It was sad of them to seem to foresee the child's fate. Klimt wanted to explore the fetus as an adult, but he also used the work to force viewers to think about the relationship between life and death within the same framework

Jamie Diamond's photography is rooted in postmodern feminism, and her photography is often filled with elements such as babies, women, and dolls. Through these works, she hopes to explore the role and positioning of women in the family.
